Defiance and berserk inducement would work, with the key thing being that they would have their motivations/actions controlled rather than their emotions (which is why Bobbi's empathy ability failed to work).
In the case of Ren's ability, the defiance would lead them to being disoriented, as if they're broken out of a form of existence they prefer. They'll rebel: rebel against being removed, rebel against not being able to move in unison with the others and they'll spot Ren and try to hurt him to see if it will stop this break.
In the case of Akechi's ability, the berserk mindset would bypass the disoriented period, and they would have a similarly defiant reaction, only with a lot more anger and lashing out. Rather than being able to focus on any single target, they'll attempt to harm and kill everyone around them: their fellow soldiers, any citizens and even themselves if they lack a focus. The overall act will be to be a weapon, albeit one that's not trained on any person and therefore is trained on every person.
