I was initially thinking something like childhood friends for these two, with some distance as they grew older. They have a similar background and probably would have run into each other all the time.

It does make the whole thing with him having hooked up with Yen for at least a few months a few years ago (a little before his Sympathies started stirring) potentially weirder and more soap opera.
