EVENT 004 WRAP UP
On October 8, all of the characters will wake up to find themselves on a train steadily heading to New Tokyo. While some characters were well on their way there already, the rest will find themselves likely puzzled as to how they got here – and why they both have legal transportation "papers" and a packed bag. What they'll soon learn is that they are on a train to New Tokyo to help out with relief efforts as the city finds itself hit by the worst snowstorm it's experienced in a century. Numerous people there are without power, and many are missing at this time. All characters will be on legal and official leave from work to attend this trip, and will be expected to be back home by October 20, though they can return as early as October 16.
No monster attack will have taken place in either New Tokyo or New Johannesburg. Instead, this weather event will be the cause for Peggy Carter's desire to reach out and get the various Displaced to the other side of the world. Her efforts and hope to help out won't be forgotten. Anyone who expressed concerns to Gaby will find that she thinks that their worries were about New Tokyo, as well as Morningstar going dark as the storm hit, causing a surprising amount of communication interference despite the neural implants.
OOCly, everyone heading to New Tokyo is mostly for ease of play! We want players to be able to explore another city, as well as get their characters outside. The upcoming arrival log will take place in New Tokyo. However, as you might guess, there are IC/metaplot reasons for why everyone is on that train, and how they got there.
Eventually, the train bound for New Tokyo will go underground – and that means underwater, as well. Diving straight into the Pacific Ocean, the speedy train will eventually take everyone to the arrival platform in New Tokyo. There will be the sense that a great deal of technology went into building this place, and no part of it will be natural. Manmade the entire way through, New Tokyo is one of the many technological wonders of Meadowlark's world.
A thin strip of land connects New Tokyo to the Asian continent, but it may look as if this strip of land is nothing more than a sandbar connecting this unnatural structure to the rest of the world. It certainly doesn't offer an actual connection, as New Tokyo dips hundreds of feet under water and scales upward. Like all the megacities around the world, there is a wall around New Tokyo that wraps around the outside at both its highest and lower levels.
Unlike many megacities around the world, New Tokyo pays the most homage to the city that influenced its creation. Largely built by Japanese entrepreneurs hundreds of years ago, it was an ambitious structure that eventually became known as the first completely man-made city, and they remade a lot of the same buildings and structures to pay homage. These businesses are the heart of New Tokyo, especially as it's expanded in order to contain about 45 million people. Although New Tokyo is on the ocean, it's made to withstand most dangerous conditions.
When characters arrive, they'll be directed toward PRESERVE headquarters to check in and get their dormitory-style lodgings where there will be four (4) characters to each room and bunk beds. Space is limited! There will be a Morningstar contact there named Nico who will be eager to meet the characters and help them out. Unfortunately, their lack of preparation for these cold conditions will mean that they need to remain indoors where there are temporary heating units to help everyone out. There is a promise of more warm clothing and supplies soon, and these will arrive within two days. For now, characters will have to huddle down and be glad that PRESERVE has regular heat.
Once characters are able to explore, they'll find that most of the city is without power. Relief centers like PRESERVE's are doing better, and perhaps unsurprisingly, some high-end skyscrapers that grow out of the man-made structure of the city are still able to maintain power. Otherwise, businesses are shuttered as the city tries to recover many of their resources. The only good news is that many sources of food remain safe because of the extremely frigid temperatures.
Most of the tasks at hand will involve looking for missing people, trying to ensure people in locations with the most accumulated snow cover are getting food and supplies, and that they can begin shoveling and removing snow so they can exit their homes with ease.
> POINTS OF CLARIFICATION
Before diving into the world changes, we want to cover some information that we believe will be immediately relevant!
◉ Yes, part of the date shift is for OOC calendar reasons! But it's also partly for IC reasons that will be revealed in time.
◉ Everything with Oktoberfest still took place. It happened a couple days earlier, and everyone still experienced their dreams. Nothing will change for the Displaced/PCs. As far as they're concerned, waking up on a train headed to a snow-covered New Tokyo is weird.
◉ Since the calendar shift occurred, all March applicants will have their IDs made. There won't be any problems on this front!
◉ Everyone leaving for New Tokyo relief efforts will have an excuse to go, so they won't be skipping out on work! However, it's up to you all if you want their employers to be annoyed about this legitimate excuse.
◉ There won't be any changes to network content. However, Gaby will be very confused to find information about another monster attack instead of a snowstorm. Did people decide to use "monster attack" as a euphemism for snowstorms? Gaby will think that all of her conversations regarding the monster attack in New Tokyo were actually about the snowstorm there. Even if the world has undergone the worst of climate change, it's rare that anything hits unexpectedly.
◉ You can feel free to have your character wake up as soon as this post is up!
◉ Characters will have access to the internet as soon as they wake up!
There are a lot of changes below! We recommend reading through the first two sections in their entirety, as they will reflect a change in the world's beliefs and circumstances. Otherwise, you can CTRL+F your character's name – we used everyone's network handle, since it felt right in some cases and figured we should be consistent throughout.
As a note, while some changes are not reflected below, we don't intend to use any alterations from the Underground Caves and the adjoining Ruins and the Forests. We may change our minds on this in the future, but we largely used these settings to provide some worldbuilding and history for our playerbase.
Any other changes that are listed below, characters would be able to find out about through their various accounts via their implant.
> OVERALL WORLD SHIFTS
◉ New Tokyo does not experience a monster attack. Instead, a sudden snow storm hits the city without any warning on OCTOBER 5. Despite the rather advanced nature of climate control and meteorological tracking, they were unable to prepare for the several feet of snow that hit overnight. There is nothing natural about this snow storm, especially since most weather movements around the world tend to trend toward being far warmer than colder. The unusual nature of the storm means that limited information reaches the outside world – which, again, is an unnatural condition.
◉ New Johannesburg does not experience a monster attack, either. Instead, a sudden thunderstorm hits the city without any warning on OCTOBER 8. This event tracks very similarly to the one in New Tokyo – it's completely unexpected, but conditions aren't nearly as bad as they are in New Tokyo. PRESERVE sends over a relief group, but it's much smaller.
◉ As fewer and fewer answers come out about the June monster attacks, as well as the monster-related sickness at the tail end of July, people start to become antsy. The people of New Amsterdam start to feel paranoid about why they lack answers, both from the government and the three major corporations that are involved in every part of their lives. People in other cities start to worry, too, about whether they might be on the receiving end of an attack like this – though they have no reason to know that two cities were hit, thanks to the changes. This appears to be a situation that is likely to escalate very soon.
◉ Sentiments toward Morningstar begin to warm up. Morningstar has been quietly helping the underprivileged of Meadowlark's world for the past 50 years, but few people have felt encouraged to ever feel positive about it. Many of those who were helped by the group chose to join up – Gaby is one such example – while the rest were either fortunate enough to never need to, or too afraid to throw their lot in. This increase in warmth will be slow but steady, and will start off with people beginning to share stories about how someone they know had their life saved by Morningstar's efforts.
This warmth will also help with Morningstar's recruitment practices around the world, and will open up the opportunity for native/NPC recruitment within New Amsterdam once the new chapter is up and running.
◉ Meanwhile, Morningstar sentiments among their (native) recruits start to shift more toward positive deeds to focus on delivering hope to the underprivileged, rather than acting as an underground military organization. While there will be those who still believe in the need for violent intervention – that is why they saved the Displaced and were later tricked into the trap at the UNA base – this overall sentiment won't be promoted as much within Morningstar ranks.
◉ Morningstar sentiments are even warmer on the UNC2 (the Mars colony). Frustrated by their continued mistreatment and lies by corporations, the people there begin to wear Morningstar emblems quite boldly. People worry that there is a chance of another round of the Venus Riots starting up.
◉ Even though it's 500 years after her death, Whitney Houston is having a renaissance of sorts in New Amsterdam. Various local singers begin to cover her songs, while others come together to remember her music and her life. The cause for this? A cover of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" serves as the opening song for the newest season of Vestica: Aeon.
◉ Four locations around New Amsterdam begin to experience strange events. Some people report them as hauntings, while others claim they're experiencing some crazy hallucinations – though they aren't on any drugs to make that happen. These four locations are: Ojiro Sniper's apartment building, City Hall, the New Amsterdam Stadium, and the safehouse.
More of these events will be covered in upcoming calendars!
◉ A mysterious incident occurs overnight near the New Amsterdam stadium, leaving a rather large crater in the area. A few New Amsterdam civilians are hospitalized as a result of this event, but no one can explain the cause for this otherwise. Some people assume that it's the end result of Oktoberfest, as well as people driving their hover cars when they really should not be doing that.
◉ The current safehouse in New Amsterdam will be packed up and ready for a move. By the time characters return from New Tokyo, the new safehouses for the Displaced will be ready underneath the hover bike shop and bar. Any further security measures or setup will need to be done by the Displaced when they return.
> POLITICAL SHIFTS
◉ As a response to the rising positivity for Morningstar, the United Nations' website now has a page dedicated to reporting suspected Morningstar agents. They are listed as a danger to the world's prosperity. If anyone knows about someone's Morningstar ties, they should turn them in immediately. There are no known penalties for these agents or for anyone choosing to turn them in.
◉ Ardyn Sky is appointed the Chairperson of the Economic and and Financial Affairs Council for New Amsterdam. He qualified for this position because of his extensive career as Pulsar's Chief Financial Officer. On his first day at work, he'll find a gift basket full of gourmet meats – primarily focusing on an array of the world's best sausages.
◉ Thanks to her heroic and selfless efforts during the June 27 monster attacks – as well as her concern for the people in New Tokyo – Margaret Carter is appointed to the head of the Committee for Customs & Border Protection Policy.
◉ Thanks to Ojiro Juniper's assistance during the June 27 monster attacks, they will find their credentials passed along through City Hall thanks to their ability to both be kind and discreet.
> NPC SHIFTS
◉ Hideki Maeda joins his new friends, Cain Fighter and Prom Argentum, on the relief effort trip to New Tokyo. Unlike his friends, he's actually prepared for the snowy conditions. He's not eager to go for the snow – but he definitely thinks he's going to look good for going there, which couldn't hurt!
◉ The well-oiled machine that Aoi and her husband, Koji Maeda, have built around their estate starts to suffer. In an effort to focus down one of the most well-known rich people in New Amsterdam, gangs in the city start to target their deliveries to cause them problems. However, there seems like there may be future trouble on the horizon. The Warlocks may be involved in these robberies.
◉ Meanwhile, Aoi asserts herself via her accountant in the fighting rings. Rather than betting for Hafid al Ghul (Damian Wayne), she begins to bet against him, sending unknown individuals against him. These men are likely to play dirty: they appear to be going for the kill, drawing out sharp, poisoned weapons to weaken Hafid while he fights.
◉ However, these men do try to kill Hafid's close associate, Matches Malone (Jason Todd), if he visits the fighting rings. He'll run into a lot of trouble while running with the Warlocks otherwise. For now, Richard Grayson is left alone.
◉ Leo Fitz's work superior, Jose Mercado, starts to experience a lot of trouble at work. He starts committing errors that he can't quickly resolve, and he's unable to utilize the skills or access that he typically has available to him to solve them. It's as if he's lost these permissions. For now, Jose is doing his best to hide his mistakes, but … he's likely to cause Pulsar to lose a lot of money very soon.
◉ Richard Grayson's NAPD coworkers will begin to see him as a kind of silent helper. While he sneaks around trying to make everyone's lives better, surveillance begins to reveal him in this role. It earns him quite the good reputation among them. He's now the teacher's pet of the entire station.
◉ Katelin Phillips (Bobbi Morse) will be a bit of a hero to her Giles Bell coworkers because of how she performed lifesaving maneuvers during the June 27 monster attacks. Even if this predates her possible employment with the company, this still appears to be true in this altered world.
◉ Gaby takes some time off while everyone is in New Tokyo. She's going to spend some much-needed time with her girlfriend.
> SOCIAL MEDIA SHIFTS
◉ Alex Benedetto becomes a bit of a local New Amsterdam hero for her participation in a karaoke competition during Oktoberfest. Her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" helps spike its already budding popularity following its reveal as the new opening for Vestica: Aeon.
◉ Ojiro Juniper gains positive notoriety as a bit of a dashing sex worker around New Amsterdam circles for their participation in Alex's karaoke performance. While much of Meadowlark's world has moments of feeling uneasy about sex work, Ojiro's solo efforts are making them a bit of a celebrity despite that.
◉ Wei Wuxian gains a couple thousand new followers thanks to their extraordinary performance during Oktoberfest. While no one has reached out to him yet with a contract, a lot of people hope for future performances from him. These numbers will continue to rapidly climb as Wei Wuxian is cited in New Tokyo trying to help out.
◉ Billy and Tommy Maximoff's association with Wei Wuxian nets them a lot of followers, as well. Their involvement in PRESERVE's New Tokyo efforts will also impress their fans – and potential fans.
◉ A whole new solo act website appears for Doctor Stephen Strange! If someone wants to book him for children's parties – or even for corporate events – they can! His Cooltalk also begins to become incrementally more popular. Stephen will find that he has a business license to perform as a magician. Congratulations?
◉ Thanks to their friendship with Hideki Maeda, Prom Argentum and Cain Fighter are now budding influencers around New Amsterdam!
◉ There were temporary videos featuring the following individuals fighting smaller monsters during the June 27 monster attacks: Sansa Stark, Alex Bennedeto, Keith Kogane, Rey Nolo, Cain Fighter, Kaldur'ahm Shayeris, Jughead Jones, Thor Odinson, Daisy Johnson, Jyn Erso, Prom Argentum, Ojiro Juniper, Margaret Carter, Jon Snow, Peter Benjamin, Stephen Strange, Sora Sky, Arya Gastaurknan and Riku Masterson. As a result of these videos, the shrines (ref: January Arrival Log) start to take on some of their likenesses. Or perhaps they always have. Their favorite subject is definitely Daisy Johnson, however!
These videos weren't posted for long. And yes, it may make no sense for newer characters to be included – quite odd, isn't it?
If any of them have a Cooltalk profile, they'll get occasional comments and questions about whether they tried to save New Amsterdam from monsters.
AS A NOTE: Aside from the occasional comments and questions, the characters may be lucky enough to find a video of them fighting monsters, but they're always quickly deleted in order to prevent a rising vigilante sentiment. People do have them saved out in the wild (so to speak), and they reupload them from time to time. These videos are always promptly deleted, and the associated account is, as well.
> POWER ADDITIONS
◉ Cain Fighter will find that he can now grow plants at a rapid rate, and even change the plant in question to something else. If a flower can't naturally take root, he'll be able to help it happen. He'll find that he can commune and communicate with plantlife, and he'll also be able to bring them back from the brink of death.
◉ Rey Nolo and Kylo Ren will have a milder version of Cain's power: they will be able to restore life to dead plants, bringing them back from the brink. They'll be able to help some plants grow – but they'll find that their power drains them of a great deal of strength.
◉ There will be no power ups available for these abilities at this time. This may change in the future!
◉ Utilizing this power will make their chests glow!
> PC-FOCUSED SHIFTS / ADDITIONS
◉ Margaret Carter will find that she is now renting an apartment in an old New Amsterdam hotel that was converted to an apartment complex about five years ago. As a result, her bathroom is rather large and snazzy, but her kitchenette leaves something to be desired. Rent for this building is moderate, and seems to be paid up for the next three months. She'll be able to discover this apartment by checking her account information, as she'll have a notification about it.
◉ Daisy Johnson and Jyn Erso are now on a joint lease for an apartment in a beautiful high-rise building in the Financial District of New Amsterdam. The deal they get on this place is amazing. They're still required to pay for it, but someone on an entry level salary could easily pay for it and have 75% of their monthly wages leftover.
◉ Loki Odinson is promoted to the head of his department. He's now the manager. He also has a snazzy new coat that mimics his canonical coat, albeit without any of the fancy abilities.
◉ Clarke Griffin is now moonlighting as a receptionist for New Amsterdam hospitals and as a new lab tech for Giles Bell. Hopefully she can actually pull off her new job!
◉ Johnny Jaqobis' boss starts to find that he's disenchanted with anime following the new Vestica: Aeon opening. While everyone enters a new phase where they listen to Whitney Houston nonstop, he starts getting very cantankerous about anyone who mentions her or her legacy.
◉ Jon Snow, Markus Manfred and Laura Moon all find that they are now the proud owners of a half pound of coffee beans.
◉ Markus Manfred will also have a new plant in his apartment when he eventually arrives home.
◉ Laura Moon will find that she's treated rather well while visiting any gambling dens or casinos. However, it's up to her to prove that she deserves that treatment!
Whether someone has been here from the beginning or just arrived last month, they are eligible for a power level up here. The thread itself must involve the dreamscape log for at least 5 comments. Threads must reach the 5 comments and be submitted here by May 10th.
To put in for your power level up, please comment with the form below.
After we have approved your level up, you will be able to submit it on the powers page to level up your character's power at any time.
As a note, this is a more limited window because of the extended nature of the event!
A lot went down in this event, and there are still several hanging hooks from previous events! To follow up on anything, please contact us at our plot engagement post.
We will post the Arrival Log for everyone on April 20. Due to the nature of the relief efforts described for this month, there won't be any prologue for an event in May! This is both so that everyone can relax and so the mods can recharge their plotting batteries! Our next event month will be in June.
Our next calendar will be going up shortly, and we'll edit a link to it here. Additionally, our next activity check goes up on May 1, as well as our next CR meme. For our new players, we were asked to do a monthly CR meme so that people can make plans at the top of the month.
Please feel free to ask any follow up questions below!
