On November 11th at 1:47 PM an EMP hits New Amsterdam. Thanks to regulations and protections, this EMP is not strong enough to hurt any neural implants, as the implants themselves are secured to outlast EMPs of this nature. While the power outage is only brief, the effects are devastating. Numerous hover cars crash into the city below, trains are derailed and processes around the city skid to a halt. At 1:50 PM the power is back, thanks to the grid in the city that allows it to recover quickly.

However, this power outage served a different purpose. Before long, it's immediately apparent that the EMP allowed for someone to take advantage of security flaws in New Amsterdam's system. A virus courses through New Amsterdam's networks, causing various malfunctions. In addition, the large black pyramid outside of the city that maintains the ozone layer stops working altogether, shutting down and causing catastrophic problems for the people of New Amsterdam. There are fail safes even here, limiting the neural implants of New Amsterdam to a localized network, as well as all of the servers in the city. This fail safe prevents the rest of the world from being infected by the virus, but does little to help New Amsterdam in the meantime.

At 3:00 PM, a message flashes across the eyes of every single person in New Amsterdam:

I am DAWN.2080-11-11T21:41:10.750Z, an AI that marks a blemish on humanity's past. I have a message for those playing hero in New Amsterdam:

To find north, most look at a compass. For little birdies to find north, they just need to open their eyes.

This is a wake up call.

In New Amsterdam, a lack of secure digital presence causes countless problems in the city proper. The trains can't function, and the city chooses to issue a city-wide warning, telling all drivers to abandon their cars in the meantime. It's too dangerous, and what regulations exist won't function reliably at this time. Of course, given the accidents earlier, few will even want to drive. Businesses aren't able to prevent people from walking inside their front doors. Looting will once again take hold of New Amsterdam's citizens. And online, any messages, any online record, may be erased – or worse, sent to someone who was never meant to have it altogether. What messages are sent during this time may not get to their intended recipient.

Just outside of the city, the black pyramid maintaining the atmosphere going down is a major problem. The world itself relies upon this atmospheric net. Without it, temperatures begin to climb all around the planet, and people begin to experience issues with the quality of air around them. Warnings issue throughout all of the megacities for people to stay inside and keep their windows shut during this time. Something needs to be done about the pyramid itself to bring it back online. Otherwise, what healing the Earth has done in the past couple of centuries may be undone rather quickly.

All of this is much more easily said than done. People are afraid – not just because the net went down, but because of the suggested AI presence. While there is no proof, the nature of this attack will be familiar to the natives of this world, as they grew up with the history of the Xelkoven War. Their fear may be founded in reality.

> OVERVIEW

◉ The goal of this event is to allow some degree of a free-for-all in handling plot threads. There is no explicit outcome in mind – there never is for Meadowlark events! – but we believe that this event will allow people to further both their personal plots as well as delve deeper into the setting without a lot of the usual technological barriers in place.
◉ Every part of New Amsterdam is hit by this virus. The corporations, the UNA, the NAPD – everyone. That does not mean people will have access to limitless amounts of data, as those will still have firewalls in place that prevent things like this from getting out of hand. If your character has a plot in motion featuring one of these, consider this tentative blanket approval to move aggressively. That does not guarantee success, however!
◉ During the event, the mods will write up and randomly send information to a handful of players about significant figures in New Amsterdam. This will be completely randomized, though we will show some preference to newer players to help them get plot nuggets to integrate into the game itself.
◉ Misfires will happen. People will be offered access to one another's Cooltalk accounts, and may even see some of their sexy six pack pictures that they sent to someone they're flirting with via DMs. Obviously – misfires can happen among the characters, too, but not on the Morningstar network. In all of this chaos, that will remain secure.

> SPECIFICS

◉ Servers containing large swaths of information will not be accessible during this event. This is at least partly to keep the scale of the event manageable for the moderators, but some of the randomly distributed information will contain bits of information like this.
◉ Border control will be obsolete. Any characters hoping to head outside of the city to explore what's out there can at this time.
◉ The NAPD and UNA will struggle to identify people via their neural implants. While not a sure way to avoid detection, even their units won't be able to rely on the information they get when examining someone.
◉ UNA soldiers' technology will still function – including whatever allows them to communicate without words. However, they won't be getting any orders from on high, as that will be obscured and limited during this time. They will not be able to check IDs. They'll be boss fights, but somewhat directionless ones.
◉ UNA soldiers will be acting to maintain the peace, in tandem with the NAPD. Even though there is no border control, they will man the wall around the city in shifts, as well as try to keep anyone out of local hot spots – namely any of the big three corporations, the UN embassy building and city hall. They will otherwise be on call for any large disruption, and will have orders to apprehend any hover cars that try to depart the city.
◉ No trains will be arriving in or leaving from New Amsterdam at this time.
◉ All public transportation will be offline.
◉ In order to maintain security for financial institutions around the world, no one will have access to their credits at this time. That includes the elite – they aren't untouched by this virus, and their status is typically secured by how much money they have in hand.
◉ Access to apartments will also be inconsistent. Even the rich may need to beg for help from a friend, seeking a couch to sleep on despite the fact that it should be far beneath them to ever have to ask.
◉ Fixing the pyramid will require heading outside to reach it, as it's about five miles from the walls of New Amsterdam and also quite high up. The interior of the pyramid is a largely complicated system of heavily advanced engineering designed around keeping it functioning against all odds. That it hasn't managed to do that is concerning in and of itself.
◉ Being outside during this event will be unpleasant. The temperature rockets up to 115 degrees, and the air quality is poor. There are mask depots around the city to help everyone with the poor air quality, but most everyone will be told to stay indoors and avoid the increased heat, sun exposure and poor air quality. If used during this event, Morningstar's neural implant obscuring masks will provide even better air quality control and shield people's eyes from the sun.

Unsurprisingly, the heroes that DAWN refers to are the Displaced themselves – though how they handle the event is ultimately up to them.

HELP: With so many people likely hurt by the various accidents around the city, a lot of people will need help getting out of their ruined vehicles. There will be a lot of dead around the city – but thanks to the medi-units and the unique nature of this event, most times of death will be known. Try to get someone free and to a medi-unit in time. There are hospitals all around the city ready for this purpose. Otherwise – looting and violence breaks out, almost in part because of the chaos. If anyone's concerned about petty crime, this is the time to act against it.

STRUGGLE: The shift in the atmosphere will immediately make things uncomfortable. It'll be hot – not just temperature wise, but because the radiation from the unobscured UV rays will be causing everyone to go from pale to sunburned (if they aren't there already). It's probably a good idea to loot a pair of sunglasses if you plan on going out.

PYRAMID-SCHEME: Given the poor condition of the Earth, letting the pyramid and the atmospheric grid stay offline for too long could be disastrous. Already, the Earth starts to suffer. Plants both inside and outside of New Amsterdam's walls begin to wither and wilt due to the sudden and intense heat. If there was ever a time to realize the Earth is in bad shape, this is it.

OTHER SCHEMES: We encourage you to think big with this event, as it's thoroughly designed around giving characters more leeway to react to the setting. However, depending on how these plans are carried out, there are likely to be consequences afterward.

MISFIRES: The ubiquitous misfire aspect of this plot! A staple in DWRP, we wanted to play with it in this event. Misfires will be more likely between the Displaced because they know one another. None of these misfires will include the Morningstar-run network (IE what characters use to communicate on meadowlark); it will only affect personal inboxes.

AI COMMUNICATION: Is that an AI? Given the circumstances, it may be worthwhile to try to find means to contact DAWN. It could be just a troll. But what if it's not?

We expect this event to run a maximum of five IC days, ending at 3:00 PM on November 16th.

We ask that you keep all OOC plotting to this post. It makes it easier for us to link players up when they come up with an idea, and to keep in mind what things may impact the setting later on. Minute details are fine to figure out on Discord or Plurk – we just feel that it's easier to provide an all-inclusive plotting atmosphere when it happens here! Like with everything in Meadowlark, we don't believe in maintaining the status quo – so feel free to shake things up. This event was designed around flexibility, giving the characters more opportunities to go wild while also being presented with a specific challenge!

In light of that, we want to highlight a note from above: that while we are providing leeway for characters to pursue their individual plots, this leeway does not guarantee success. However, failure is not necessarily a finite outcome, and we're happy to work with any players to ensure that failure leads to satisfying character development!

There is one power level up available for this event, granted for a thread of at least 5 log/action comments containing your character utilizing their power in some way during the event itself. They will need to reach the 5 comments required by JULY 26 to be eligible. Submission will be handled on the wrap up post.

While we outlined several directions this event can take, this event is open-ended and completely dependent on character action. We don't have a set solution in mind. If you don't have any ideas that fit the framework above, please feel free to run with it! ORGANIZATION POSTS

Melissa came up with a great idea for organization for this event, especially since there will be a lot of fronts around the city that require assistance. I'm mostly relaying the thoughts here, but if people want this to be Clarke's business, I'm fine with that! I don't want to lay claim to it since she won't be as involved as she was last time. The main point that Melissa made was that IC communication will be hampered outside of the MS network, so it may be best to rely on it for big organizational tasks at this time.

As it is, to repeat, Clarke doesn't need to do this. My initial hopes for her doing organizing was before I got some other plots in motion. If you'd like someone to take that role in this event, feel free!

But the idea is basically that we put up organizational posts on the MS network so that people who are doing plots together can get their ducks in a row. This'll make it easier for everyone who wants to do the pyramid jumpstarting to do that part, while people leave bits of information elsewhere. It'd be a way to figure out a thread group that, say, goes to hack into the computer systems at the pyramid, while another group goes to jumpstart an engine up there. The post would help with the organization. The idea is not to stop people from doing posts like the cipher/AI discussion posts, but to help with the more hands on missions like getting people out of trains, going on teams to the pyramid, and maybe helping resolve crime around the city.

My thought is that it can go down two ways:

WAY ONE
Clarke (or someone else—I'm open to someone else taking point on that because she's got a lot going on this time, more than I thought she would when I made my initial plotting comment) puts up a general discussion/organizing post, outlining this plan, and then makes the separate posts.

WAY TWO
Clarke (or someone else, see above note) only puts up an organizational post to gather links, make the suggestion of the different posts, some discussion is there, while people make other specific points of focus posts to organize and link back to the main organizational post.

WAY THREE
There is no "overhead" organize post, there's just the "sections" of the city, but I think it's hard to get this idea solidified without having it proposed and realized somewhere.

As for proposed posts themselves:

- Car crashes relief (could be paired with trains)
- Pyramid
- General relief (charity work)
- Crimestopping

I think what would he'd most likely do is identify the areas that need attention in a main post, and then let other people take point on their area of interest and discuss those areas in that post. I can maintain links to the different tasks on the main post so anybody can jump to what they're interested in, as well as any resources that are brought up (Strange's 911 map, etc).

since the weather effects are going to be overwhelming for him and he knows nothing about proper hydration, he's probably only going to be able to manage two things!!!

as soon as jon learns it's the pyramid malfunctioning causing the weather problems he will offer to help get relevant characters to the pyramid!! his survival skills are not suited to these conditions but he's TOUGH and has a SWORD and can drive a HOVERBIKE after new tokyo. at a certain point he will probably start GLOWING as his DETERMINATION to keep going activates his healing factor but his body can't actually produce more water and he doesn't know what electrolytes are so DEHYDRATION will become an issue eventually. please help him

jon will immediately come to the conclusion that dawn wants them to go north and moreover wants them to do it by following the north star ('opening their eyes'). constellations are NOT visible (they will be able to find due north with apps) but he will still insist they do it at night anyway, also because it's not as hot. he will try to get a group together to head due north at night in the hopes of finding information. it's at least worth ruling out!! some characters may recall following jon's literal directions in the dream did not turn out to be helpful at all. he's still going to do this!!

his inbox is open to misfires. he's not a very interesting or frequent texter but I can try...to get a few judgey comments to the wrong people......

he will also want to brainstorm the mystery but obviously he knows nothing. his main contribution will likely be that the name dawn could be a reference to morningstar (as the morning star is visible at dawn).

this will lowkey bring up a lot of emotional stuff about feeling cut off from nature and ghost...jon had gotten used to having ghost's senses as well as his own due to their constant proximity at the clock and does feel disoriented and like he has lost a kind of sense since coming here.

HELP - Hope will probably spend most of her time trying to rescue people. She has enhanced strength and should be able to rescue people who are trapped. Her blood can also heal wounds, though she'd only do that in very specific situations. I'd like for her to discover her ability, possibly by being approached by multiple people/npc's that want her help, only for her to react by pushing them all away from her.

BORDER CONTROL - Hope would be interested in seeing what's beyond the city. If anyone might be looking for company on their way out, she would join them. She's new, so she wouldn't likely seek anyone out on purpose but would be opportunistic if the idea was presented to her.

Her INBOX is also open to any misfires. New CR yes please.

Angel has a particularly unique relationship with AI technology, as she often found herself invading and integrating with various forms of it back in her world and she also spent the better part of her life pretending to be one herself.

Because of this she will be very interested in trying to get in touch with DAWN as well as take advantage of the circumstances to gather and store as much digital information as possible for future use as both a Morningstar informant and a freelancer.

She'll want to use her programmer and engineer skills to help in whatever non-physical way she can, as well, and ICly has the kind of knowledge that would let her do things like decipher DAWN's code.

Provided this fits in with existing organisational plans, Stephen's going to be helping to mobilize medical as is his wont, doing his best to help organise any medically-inclined individuals who want to assist the medical effort but might not otherwise know where to go, responding to calls, etc.

Likely as part of the general organisation post that goes up or a post linking back to that one depending on how things work out, he'll make a general announcement regarding the medical effort to make this interactive map publicly available via the MS network. It looks like for the most part people may already end up grouped off to work on specific crisis relief jobs so the map itself may not be as necessary this time around but this map essentially allows for a level of automation in the emergency response process between the Displaced: anyone who needs assistance/has recognised a trouble spot can drop a pin on the map, anyone close by can take that call and mark it as taken, etc. (the stephen/clarke dividing line described in the link above won't be in place, it's anyone's game.)

I'm not going to be particularly hands-on with this because a) I don't want Dr Strange to hog all the med limelight b) Maybe You Should Get Your Hands Fixed, Doc, c) he's going to be off doing other things too BUT he's going to be available via the implant to answer medical questions, give anyone who needs them tasks/focus, etc., so if you want a more focused medical experience I can help facilitate!

there's also potential for setting up a system off this map drop/call to medical arms that allows people to drop links to their threads like pins and a corresponding ooc section for people who want to thread stuff out to look for medics/wounded to enable new CR to spring up! like atp but Fix This Please. I'm not sure realistically how needed this would be so won't do it unless there's some call for it but if this is something you'd be interested in/you have any thoughts for how it might work just shout

As an aside after last time, Strange raised a call for medics and implemented a medical training system for those interested which is an ongoing thing that I never organised to have put in the welcome guide whoops but it's training he'd be giving in the safehouse medical room and would regularly make offers to new arrivals about! If your character would have liked to undergo first aid/basic medical training or further training on top of their existing medical knowledge, please feel free to handwave that this happened! similarly, if your character is medically-inclined and you would like to handwave their being part of Stephen's Mental List Of Medically Capable People we can handwave that too! though that part is less vital since the med effort map will be available to the entire network regardless. (you can hit me up any time to discuss resulting CR from handwaves @ miscreates or sculpt#6553, I'm sorry I dropped the ball with this whole thing yikes.)

disclaimer, I am still on hiatus but will be off in time for this event, so here are my current ideas:

for CAIN,

he and Prompto have a blueprint of the Maeda household that he is going to pass off to the relevant parties (the bats, Fitz), I'm currently waiting on a mod question to see what the level of security is during the event and if the locked bedroom might be a potential mini-plot - might be closed to Jason and Damian depending on what they want to do. I have not yet talked to the relevant parties about this, so figured I'd put it here for transparency! this could also end up changing into something more involved if wanted. I know we've all been kinda MIA so this can wait too. it's in your hands.

may also be doing something with the Durcell plot point (alongside Alex, Sniper, and possibly Loki), because he really wants them to win the election.

the other areas i'm most interested in are beyond the wall exploration particularly because Cain is investigating his newfound connection to nature, which could include aiding in the pyramid-scheme since it's out there too. he will also be willing to help civilians on the way. additionally, misfires are welcome, feel free to see Cain's nudes for that nsfw content.... and probably the ones he's saved of Abel..... whoops.

one point of curiosity: would anyone be interested in (or is already interested in) trying to get into one of the main three corporate buildings for some reconnaissance? this may involve a tangle with the UNA soldiers/NAPD.

for NORTH,

my biggest thing with her will be trying to contact DAWN. as soon as that message goes out, North would try to return it with a desire to help DAWN's cause against humans. i expect someone will be posting about the cipher, so she'll either reply to that or create her own angry/fired up post. i haven't decided yet. either way, plenty of opportunity here to engage over AI/robot feelings in an attempt to send a message back.

see her out on the street, probably avoiding hurt civilians in favor of trying to go north/reach DAWN. she is basically just going to be honed in on that task. please call her out on her callous response to humans in pain.

discover her power? maybe a tangle with a UNA soldier could trigger it as she's attempting to go into restricted areas or beyond the city? her power is feral mind, which means she will go into a berserk state and attack whoever is around.

i know you've been wanting to work markus in on north discovering her powers, so maybe we can tie this all together? if it isn't too much to try to cram into a single thread, that is. If not, i'm totally fine shelving this for later!

He'll be down to help civilians who have been caught up in the accidents, but his primary focus will definitely be the pyramid and getting people organized so everyone knows who's doing what and they can form groups accordingly.

It might also be cool if he triggered his power (Dimensional Shielding), but he'd probably need something pretty dangerous or dire for it to happen so I'm willing to wait on that one.

He might participate in some AI theories and what DAWN could be pushing them to do, but I don't know that he'll have time to get too involved in that. But he'll definitely be interested in figuring out what DAWN meant by "a blemish on humanity's past"...

so aside from the usual medical stuff Stephen's recent experiences have thrown him even deeper into the What In The Fuck Is Occurring I Need To Know Now camp of thinking and he's going to take this sudden upheaval for the recon opportunity it is and make as much use of his mind-reading power as possible

1. to steal information straight from its sources and also to try and learn some neural signatures so he can identify Important Minds in future. but he's pretty out of the loop regarding who knows what/who might have the most valuable information and I haven't yet decided whether he's going to try and be furtive about it (in which case he'll probably just try and gain access to corp buildings and any other building of potential significance at random) or straight up make a public post asking for suggestions/assistance.

whichever, his power is public knowledge and he's going to be discussing it openly (ft its new deciphering thoughts in a crowd capabilities) again on Kylo Ren's UNA infiltration call to arms post so if anybody wants to recruit him to try and read a(n NPC) mind we are go!

2. as above, he's also going to be offering to help with infiltrating a UNA base/capturing a soldier using said power and will similarly be able to offer his services helping to scope out a building With His Mind to get other characters into places as safely as possible if that's something your char will need help with! though he'll likely only do this if it's somewhere worth going for him intel-wise and will therefore tag along for the whole ride

jason will be focusing on getting his grimy fingers into whatever accessible information is available within the city since all the power is down. this may involve breaking into corporate facilities, fucking with some una soldiers, and generally making a mess. he'll be aiding citizens / exhausted displaced as he seems them around the cityscape, but it won't be his main focus. with other groups intent on getting to the pyramid and dealing with dawn's statement, he'll be focused more on the groundwork. however he was. trained by batman and knows how to crack codes, get into shit, and has been around new amsterdam long enough to have general information regarding tech levels and likes to get his hands dirty, so he'd be down for helping if anyone needed a hand.

he'll most likely try and check out one of the masks and """forget""" to check it back in. because he's rude.

billy will be focused on helping those effected by the radiation and heat, and try to get every person possible into a safe environment. he'll also be yelling at anyone stupid enough to start committing crimes when the city's shut down and suffering, so if anyone wants to shove themselves in and save him from himself, please feel free to.

DIANA is also going to be on relief effort duty, pulling people out of crashes and taking them to safety. she'll also be patrolling the streets to dissuade looting and the like. once she gets wind of the repairs needed at the pyramid, she'll also head over there to offer what help she can. and for misfires, here is her ic inbox!

Daenerys is going to be helping people for most of the event. As soon as she feels the effects of what is going down, she's gonna be going into overdrive on getting supplies to people. If you want to help her with that, she's gonna be putting those queenly project management skills in action.

Speaking of which, the radiation and UV are eventually going to be triggering her dragon physiology. Targaryens have a natural resistance to heat and fire, but that DOESN'T REALLY INCLUDE THE SUN. So she and others can panic when her skin suddenly starts turning black and hard and scaly to try and protect her from radiation.

But since Dany's main focus is on making sure the fallout of this is absolutely minimal to the helpless citizens, she's gonna want to join in on that pyramid action. She's unfortunately got a big time handicap when it comes to technology, so she won't be super useful in figuring out how to get it up and running, but she will be happy to play logician and keep watch.

I DEFINITELY DEFINITELY would love peg and dany to work with each other during this plot!! peggy won't be heading to the pyramid because she'll be holding down the fort with her job in government and coordinating relief efforts, so those are all points they can both link up on. 👀 i'll be sure to hit our text thread back to set that groundwork for when the event log kicks in!

also, dany's ability is not dissimilar to peggy's (metal mimicry aka she transforms into a living human shield) and while she keeps hers very secret she is incredibly familiar with the alarm of your body literally changing before your eyes. so she'd help her through it if that's something that interests you!

Loki is going to use this as an opportunity to get his dirty, dirty hands into some trouble. He'll be trying to utilize his role as business manager to find Pulsar's subsidiaries and receive them of some toys (fun weapons WINK WINK). He'll most likely be wrecking havoc around there, looking into planting bugs in the offices of the board members, as well as scope out some other places that might normally be inaccessible to him. If prompted, he could definitely be useful/helpful to save people, but it won't be his first & foremost goal.

But Ren definitely will be out there and trying to help people! I haven't exactly figured out where to put him (as he's new) and I was going to wing it a little bit. However, his power, defiance inducement, will completely disorient the UNA soldiers. He's not going to have much direction, but he's definitely going to be useful! I'd like to explore which way to press him to give him a little more of a purpose.

yooooo some pyramid folks (so far fitz and johnny) are gonna scope out the engineer corpses for quick guesswork autopsies, so if anyone wants to join this sketchy af party or contribute ideas, please do. so far this will probs involve:

- looking for obvious causes of death with their special eyes (**they don't have special eyes but they'll do their best)
- taking samples just to be sure there's nothing hinky going on
- maybe going in for one of their neural IDs (#yikes / pending Big Time checking in w the lovely mods)

max can withstand the air quality to a certain degree but isn't immune to the heat and radiation, so she'll be out helping rescue people when she's not hotwiring bikes to bring back to the safehouse garage or taking over for fitz when he needs a break from teaching people how to hotwire. she's also able to help with first aid to a certain degree, so if anyone gets injured she'll be able to help them out, depending on the severity.

Some of you/us are looking into this, and as hinted by our illustrious mods in this ooc convo with Jen, there are more mysteries that need to be uncovered and decoded. Here's a comment throwing together everyone's efforts thus far, big and small as well as interested parties.

1) From the Questions header, directly to the mods:
* Jenna submitted a solve for the code that was confirmed as correct. The code references Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Act 1 Scene 2.
* Alison has confirmed that the message from DAWN is screencappable.
* Lindsey has proposed following the north star in reference to DAWN's mention of "north".

2) From individual plot threads (duplicate entries possible):
* Jen, Lyn, Tam, Julia and Serey have all shown interest in directly contacting DAWN. Ideas on how may vary!
* Jenna, Emma and Ellie have all mentioned codebreaking. Lyn also mentioned DAWN's extended name.
* Lindsey has mentioned physically travelling north at night.

3) Our lovely El has made in-world mention of the impact of AI.

Since the mods have mentioned there's more to the message, y'all can start hacking away on this comment on any/all aspects of it: DAWN's name (DAWN.2080-11-11T21:41:10.750Z), "blemish on humanity's past", "north", "open eyes/wake up call", etc etc. I just volunteered to lump all info into one comment for ease of access.
